About Gleaning

What is Gleaning?

Gleaning is a biblical term. In Leviticus 23:22, God told the farmers; “When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very edges of your field, or gather the gleanings of your harvest; you shall leave them for the poor.”

We Glean Fresh Produce

The Gleaning Program plants and harvests in cooperation with gardeners and farmers enabling us to deliver nutritious fresh local produce to hungry people.

Over 40 farms in Chester County help us grow fresh food every year. Gleaning Gardens are being built by churches in cooperation with Community Gardens of Chester County.

The harvested food, over 80,000 lbs, is delivered to the 65+ food cupboards and feeding sites in the county who directly help feed people in need.

In the spring and fall, work is done at the farms by over 600 hands-on volunteers from every age group. Families, groups and individuals volunteer their time to help with our Gleaning efforts.
